How to check a recall without spreading a rumour.

A recall almost never covers an entire brand. Treating it as if it does is how misinformation spreads — and how people throw out food that was never affected.

Match all six fields

A recall notice identifies a specific production run, not a brand. Match all six before you conclude anything — and before you tell other parents.

Recalls worth knowing about

Not to frighten you — to show you the pattern. In almost every case the problem was caught by a lab or a doctor, not by anything printed on the package.

Cinnamon applesauce pouches — late 2023

Sold as WanaBana, and as store brands Schnucks and Weis. Found after children turned up with elevated blood lead; the CDC ultimately counted 542 children under six. Cinnamon samples ran as high as 5,110 ppm lead.

This one was different in kind: the pattern points to lead chromate added deliberately as a pigment — adulteration, not soil. It's the reason "it's made for kids" isn't a safety system.

Target Good & Gather vegetable purée — March 2025

Pea, zucchini, kale & thyme, 4 oz. Around 25,000 packages, lots 4167 and 4169.

FDA terminated the recall in May 2025 — but Oregon officials later reported two babies who'd eaten it had elevated blood lead. A closed recall isn't always the end of the story.

Publix GreenWise pouches — May 2025

Pear, kiwi, spinach & pea. Over 1,400 stores across eight states, after North Carolina’s routine sampling found 13.4 ppb lead against the FDA’s 10 ppb action level.

Same state lab program that cracked the 2023 applesauce outbreak. State labs are doing a lot of the real work here.

Sprout Organics Sweet Potato Apple & Spinach — September 2025

One lot recalled Sept 16, expanded Sept 23 to four lots total (4212, 4213, 4282, 4310), 3.5 oz pouches.

Worth saying plainly: Sprout caught this through its own routine sampling. That's the system working, and it deserves credit rather than a pile-on.

The pattern, said plainly: three of these four were caught by routine sampling — two by a state lab, one by the company itself. None were caught by a label. That’s the argument for looking up results rather than reading packaging.
